Kevin Onyona is a Kenyan-born restaurateur and hospitality entrepreneur whose journey helped shape one of the most recognizable African dining concepts in the United States. After moving from Kenya to the U.S. in the late 1990s, Onyona carried a clear vision: to create a welcoming space where authentic Kenyan and broader African cuisine could be experienced with pride, warmth, and cultural depth.

That vision became Swahili Village, a restaurant brand built around authentic Kenyan and pan-African flavors and hospitality. What began as a small, community-rooted concept later grew into a multi-location hospitality destination known for its distinctive menus and immersive atmosphere—positioned as a true cultural and culinary showcase for African cuisine, with Kenyan dining at its core.

As the brand expanded to locations in Beltsville, Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Newark, New Jersey, the Washington, D.C. site—marketed as "The Consulate"—further reinforced Swahili Village's identity as more than a restaurant. It became a place where food, tradition, and diplomacy intersect in an environment designed to feel familiar, representative, and welcoming to guests from every background.
